How I wear jewel tones

For fall and winter, I like to swap brighter and lighter colors for deeper jewel tones. Navy, forest green, burgundy: those are the colors I go for when I get dressed in the morning. They are colors that suit me well and I love how they can be dressed up or dressed down. Depending on texture, the styling of these items can give a more casual or formal result. This is how I wear jewel tones on the daily.

The Satin Shirt

This is a good example of how I love to throw together a quick work outfit. A pair of casual jeans and a fun shoe add some interest while keeping the outfit balanced and nothing too crazy. The shirt is simple and thus there it lots you can do with it. Because the buttons on the shirt have an almost silver sheen to it, I thought it would be good to pair it with my silver shoes to tie the outfit together.

But jeans are just one way of styling up jewel tones. Jewel tones also go perfectly with earthy tones as well. Think creams, camels, browns, etc. For this outfit, I styled a forest green shirt with a tie up sleeve detail with a button up camel skirt. The skirt not only pairs well because of the color, but also because of the texture. Since the shirt is a jersey material and the skirt a faux suede, it adds some interest. To keep the color continued in the outfit, I opted for a shoe in a similar color, but that also has a more textured look.

The Lapel Shirt

Burgundy is quite possibly one of my favorite colors to wear. One of my favorite cardigans is in the shade. This shirt is another favorite. This has a great detail: the double lapel in a contrasting color. Because of that, it is a standout item in my wardrobe and I like to make the shirt stand out more, by pairing it with basic blacks. So black jeans and black shoes. Again, the shoe repeats the color of the shirt as it features some burgundy details.

Dresses are some of my favorite items to wear. Jewel toned dresses are a little bit more difficult to find in my opinion, as they tend to be winter colors and shops sell fewer dresses in the winter months. But when you find one, they are a great staple to have. I bought this for the Christmas season a few years ago, but still wear it on the regular. I love doubling up dresses like that. Because the dress has a lot going on (there is lace, a full circle skirt and long sleeves) I like keeping the shoes simple. By going for patent leather, you can add a little bit of a texture clash and keep the dress the center piece of the outfit.

If I could have a penny for every navy sweater that catches my eye, I would now be rich. I luckily own ‘only’ three. One of them is this navy blue cable knit sweater. This was a lucky steel. Sometimes, I find pairing blue on blue, so blue sweater on blue jeans, a little much. Pairing it with black can be a little bit of a dark outfit. To keep it fresh, I think a grey pair of jeans nicely breaks it up and a pair of black shoes will keep it nice and simple.
