Colourpop Super Shock Cheek Hippo

In my recent makeup favorites of 2017, I listed Colourpop Hippo as one of my favorite highlighters of the year. And it was a product I had not yet posted online with a review. So it is high time that I got round to doing it. It was not a product that was love at first sight. At first, I hardly used this at all as I wasn’t sure how to use it. But once I had figured it how best to apply it, I fell in love.

Colourpop Super Shock Cheek Hippo

Colourpop is a brand that is known for its affordability. Most products retail for less than $10. This highlighter in particular retails for $8, which for a highlighter is of course quite affordable. Hippo is listed by Temptalia as a possible dupe for the much more expensive Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Prismatic Amethyst. With a price difference of close to €30, this is of course a great product to own if the Becca one is a little out of your league.

The Packaging

The packaging of Colourpop products is very similar. The Super Shock Cheek compacts are a little bit larger than an eyeshadow, but if you put them all together the compacts are nearly identical. A compact only contains 4.2 grams of product, which isn’t a whole lot. But for that you do get a product that goes a long way as you only need a little. Colourpop Super Shock products come in a twist cap compact that is supposed to prolong the life of the product as it is cream to powder formula

The Product

Hippo is described as a cool-toned icy lavender. This highlighter definitely has an icy undertone with pink and lavender hues. The cream to powder formula is difficult to apply with a brush, but with fingers is becomes a little easier. I have found however, that this is best applied with a damp BeautyBlender, or another makeup sponge. I twist the makeup sponge in the product and stamp it onto my face. The result is a perfectly blended application.

The Swatch

Swatched out the highlight is quite intense. The icy tones are clearly visible. The lavender/ pink shade is not so discernible on the back of my hand, but it does translate to the cheek, when the highlight is blended out. Depending on how the light catches the product, you will get a slightly different flash of color.

The Application

On the cheek the highlight is still icy, but the purple undertones are also easier to see. I like these kind of shades on my skin tone. Many highlights barely show up on me because they are too dark, but highlights like this always look great, especially in the winter days when my skin is ultra pale.

The Conclusion

With Colourpop Hippo highlighter being the type of shade that I love wearing for highlight, it is safe to say I love this highlighter. It took a while to get the hang of the application, but once I figured it out, it not only looked great, I also got a lot more use out of it. This is a great highlighter for fair skinned gals who are looking for a highlight that shows up and actually highlights for a change.
