Catrice Watermelon Shine Glow Lip Balm review

Who’d have thought that sheer lip products would be a thing come 2021? And most importantly: that I would be someone who would be loving that trend! Because until very recently, anything that was sheer or balmy or shiny on the lip, I wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole. I wouldn’t come near it as I just greatly disliked anything that didn’t offer me full on pigment. Maybe it’s the face masks, maybe it’s all the working from home, but 2020 and 2021 have seen me change my tune completely. So how apt is it then to review a tinted lip balm? This is the Catrice Watermelon Shine Glow lip balm and I love it!

Review: Catrice Watermelon Shine Glow Lip Balm

This lip balm is part of the new Catrice Spring/ Summer release and one that I was instantly intrigued by. Why? Because I tried and loved last year’s tinted balm rendition, which was their Hemp lip balm. That was a similar product, but it started off green and then developed a slight rosy toned sheen. This one goes on rosy toned immediately. The price point is also the same: at €4.99 this lip balm is quite cheap and cheerful and one that is also great in terms of nourishment for the lips.

What does this lip balm have to offer?

Now you might think: a full dedicated review for a lip balm? But yes, I do tend to like these Catrice lip balms to the point where I like them enough that I want to rave about them. I ended up using my Hemp version a ton last year as it made for a great base layer under makeup. I was therefore wondering whether this would be the same. This lip balm is indeed the same in terms of texture and formula. It nourishes my lips equally well. Not the kind of lip balm to wear overnight, but for a quick spruce up throughout the day or at the start of a makeup routine this is a great one.

What are the benefits of this lip balm?

Apart from a good lip balm formula that does what it needs to do, this balm is also tinted. As you will see below, this balm has a subtle rosy tone to it. The hemp balm had that too, but that shade developed and became more intense as you wore it. This does not. To me, that is an added benefit as with the hemp balm I never knew in advance what it might end up looking like. The more I put on the more intense the shade would become, but with this, you simply get what you see and that is something I like. It’s almost easier to use. And can we mention the packaging for a moment? How gorgeous is that reddish tube?

What are some downsides to this lip balm?

If we have advantages, we will also have some disadvantages and the one issue I have with this lip balm is the scent. It has a strong watermelon scent and it isn’t too great. It is the kind of watermelon scent you find in sour watermelon candy. Now I personally love me some sour watermelon candy, but I don’t necessarily need to smell it when I do my makeup. That said, the scent dissipates quickly and it barely noticeable after just a few minutes. Personally I don’t mind the scent of this too much, but if you are very sensitive to fragrant makeup than this may not be great for you.

What does this lip balm look like on?

Since this lip balm is a tinted lip balm, I thought I could swatch it for you. As I mentioned, this doesn’t change color: the color you see here on the back of my hand is the color you get when you put it onto your lips. Of course your natural lip color will alter what this products looks like on. I have quite pigmented lips myself and on me, this makes for a pretty rosy tint but it’s almost as if I am not wearing anything at all. If you have less pigmented lips naturally, you will of course get a stronger effect. In terms of how this wears: it is a balm so it will be gone quickly and I recommend throwing this into your bag if you intend to wear it all day as after a drink or 2 the shade will disappear.

My final thoughts

When Catrice released their hemp lip balm last year I was quite surprised and so this Watermelon version is one I knew I was going to like. It adds just enough color, a bit of healthy glow to the lips and it keeps my lips feeling nourished throughout the day. The Catrice Watermelon Shine Glow lip balm therefore does exactly what the name indicates it will do. It’s a cheap and cheerful little product that puts a smile on my face, but I could do without that artificial watermelon smell.

Would I recommend the Catrice Watermelon lip balm?

If you love the scent of sour watermelon candy I think this will be like hitting a homerun for you. However, if all you’re looking for is a good standard lip balm than this product will also have your back. It’s a great product to throw in your bag and since it’s not too intense, it works well under face masks without risking a huge smudge of red lipstick after you take it off. In short, this is a winner, but you do have to like that scent. So give this a whiff if you spot it and if you can deal with that, then this may be a good one to buy.
