In this review I thought we could take a closer look at the Catrice 5 in a Box eyeshadow palette in 060 Vivid Burgundy Look. This palette is a 5-pan eyeshadow palette and it is a new launch for 2021. It is part of the new Catrice Fall/ Winter update and I was super excited to see they are doing more of these. I already reviewed the other 4 palettes in the line here and here and since I loved those, I was hoping they would do some more and that if they did any that they would be as good. So I was happy to see 2 new shades being released. Today we are reviewing the warm toned one and next week I hope to be able to review the new cool toned palette with a roundup video on all 6 palettes on Sunday.
Review: Catrice 5 in a Box eyeshadow palette 060 Vivid Burgundy Look
We all know Catrice is affordable and these palette hardly break the bank at just €3.99 a piece. They are lovely, cute, small palettes that look very similar to Natascha Denona mini palettes. The shade range of the different palettes do not try to dupe ND palettes though so don’t expect these to contain the same color stories. I like that Catrice managed to create new color stories that are unique and in the first batch of releases I also really liked the options they went for. If that is the case with these new releases? Well let’s find out.
What does this palette have to offer?
The Catrice 5 in a Box 060 Vivid Burgundy Look is a 5 pan color story that skews more warm toned. The minute I spotted this I was curious to see what it would be like, because Catrice isn’t exactly known for doing great, interesting color stories. However, with these 5 in a Box palettes and with this one in particular I feel they are doing a good job at adding something more unique to their otherwise quite safe and boring offering. Is this the most revolutionary color story? No but it is more interesting compared to what Catrice usually does.
What are the shades like?
For a palette called ‘Vivid Burgundy Look’ it is not that burgundy. You do get some reddish tones, but it’s more leaning towards warm toned rose tones, rather than true burgundy. There is some depth and definition here and like all the 5 in a Box palettes you get 2 shimmers and three mattes that all match up in terms of the undertones. We start the palette with a good inner corner shimmer shade, followed by a good blend shade, then a good crease shade, a perfect shade for all over the lid and a deeper shade to create some more depth and intensity to your eye looks. So how does this palette perform? Let’s take a closer look.
How does this palette swatch?
Like the other 5 in a Box palettes, the swatches of this one are on point. These shades feel great, are well-pigmented and are easy to blend out. The all over the lid shimmer is a bit more difficult to pick up compared to the other palettes in the line. In these new palettes, I feel the shimmers aren’t as rich and creamy as in the original line up. However, you can easily build them up if you use your fingers or foil them. However, they can be a bit stiff and difficult to pick up with a brush. The mattes are nice, but I do feel that the reddish shade in the middle looks different on me than I would expect from looking at it in the pan. It actually pulls less warm toned on me and looks more like a reddish brown, dare I say a burgundy. If you have a deeper skin tone or if you have a warm undertone I expect this shade to look differently on you.
How does this palette apply to the lid?
If I just whack this one quite quickly, I am capable of doing a stunning look that is great for everyday. This is giving me ABH Soft Glam vibes and that is one of my favorite warm toned palettes as it skews so rosy tones. The shimmer all over the lid isn’t as metallic as I had hoped, but here I just used a brush to show you that effect. If you build it up more, it will shine more brightly. The crease shade looks not as warm toned as it does in the pan, but I feel it does show up more warm toned on my lower lash line. I therefore think it is a shade you can also manipulate depending on what brushes you use with it.
My final thoughts
The Catrice 5 in a Box Vivid Burgundy Look is a very pretty palette. It completely lives up to my expectations, but I am a bit suspicious as I don’t feel the formula is 100% the same as the first palettes that came out. These mattes are a bit more sheer and need more building and the same goes for the shimmers. These are still very workable and I love how the shades combine into this look as well. They just go lovely together and for a quick and easy look, this is the perfect palette in my opinion.
Would I recommend the Catrice 5 in a Box Vivid Burgundy Look eyeshadow palette?
Yes I would! I love these little 5 in a box palettes and I am so happy Catrice now does these in more territories. Depending on where you live you may not yet be able to buy this particular shade just yet, but if you want a drugstore palette that is affordable that features a wearable easy to use color story that is great for everyday looks, then this is a great choice no matter which color story you opt for.
