Catrice Hyper Hydro Serum Primer review

Can Catrice do a good primer? For sure! But is the new Hyper Hydro serum primer any good? Let’s try it out!

The Catrice Fresh It Up primer is one that I loved, but it was discontinued and I have yet to find a primer in the line that is up to par. They have released plenty in the mean time, but I am still on the hunt for the follow up. Will this be as good?

Review: Catrice Clean ID Hyper Hydro Serum Primer

Catrice products are slowly but surely becoming a bit more expensive. This primer retails for €6.49, where previously a lot of their primers were under €5. Now this does have some skincare benefits which is why this is marketed as both a serum and a primer.

What does this primer have to offer?

This dropper style serum primer promises to offer the best of both worlds. This can be skincare and this can be makeup. Truth be told, many primers can be used as skincare and many skincare products can be used as primers, so that isn’t anything new.

The claims on this is that it is hydrating as it contains hyaluronic acid, is suitable for sensitive skin and is made with 86% all natural ingredients. According to the brand this can be massaged into the skin.

What does this primer swatch like?

The first thing that stands out about this product when applied to the skin is the texture. This is a watery, liquidy formula that is a touch sticky at the same time. It feels very hydrating on the skin and it makes my makeup last very well.

But massaging this into the skin? That is definitely a no go. It is absorbed quickly by my dry skin and when it does it leaves a tacky residue. Great as a makeup base, not so much as a final step in a skincare routine if you won’t be applying anything over it.

Does this product deliver?

Overall, Catrice primers have never been a true let down for me. They nearly always work and do what I want them to do. What do I want them to do? Make my makeup last all day, without it bunching up or looking cakey.

This feels nice on my skin, it definitely seems to have some hydrating qualities. It sits well under several foundations I have tried it with (I prefer a sheer, lightweight, dewy finish) and it makes my makeup last all day. I do feel this primer is a bit too basic and it is not one I would like to repurchase.

What does this look like on the skin?

When I say this is basic, I mean basic. While this feels nice on the skin, this doesn’t do much else. It isn’t overly glowing, doesn’t blur pores or fine lines and while it promises to plum upt he skin, I feel I need skincare rather than this product to get the results I like.

As you can see in the before and after, there isn’t a big difference between these two pictures. The main noticeable result is that my skin looks redder from applying the primer, not because this truly makes a difference.

Should you buy the Catrice Hyper Hydro serum primer?

The Catrice Hyper Hydro primer is one that gets the job done. But should you buy it? I wouldn’t necessarily say you do. While this is nice enough, I don’t feel it is as special as other primers I have tried from this or other brands.

This primer is not one I aim to keep in my makeup collection and it isn’t one that I will be repurchasing. I am liking it enough to use it up. But when I do I am happy to move on to something else.

You can buy the Catrice Hyper Hydro primer from a Catrice retailer near you for €6.49. In the Netherlands that is Boozyshop or Kruidvat. EU customers can shop through Kosmetik4less or Notino. US customers can find the brand on their official US website.
