Tuned up Thursday: Music ABC – M

Tuned up Thursday: Music ABC – M

It’s Thursday afternoon, which means it’s time for my weekly music post. Since it’s the first Thursday of the month I am bringing you another post with some of my all time favorite songs. This time, they all start with the letter M. Be prepared to sit down and listen to some indie surfer music, some golden oldies from the 60s and some 00’s R&B.

Marathon – Tennis

My favorite song by Tennis and it’s not even on their album! I love the surf sound that drives Tennis’ music and this song in particular is catchy with a hint of retro.

Marieke – Jacques Brel

Some good old Jacques Brel can’t be missing from a list of music favorites in my case. I hold a special place in my heart for this song. No one in music history has been able to live up the amazing vocals of Jacques Brel and  I like this song in particular because he perfectly blends Flemish and French to tell his story.

Me And Bobby McGee – Janis Joplin

Another oldie but a goodie. It was my mom who introduced me to Janis Joplin and I got hooked on her Greatest Hits album in my teens. This song embodies my journey into music in my early teens, which took me beyond the Top 40 charts and showed me there is a lot more out there than 90s bubble gum pop.

My Generation – The Who

I had a major The Who streak when I was in college. I took a class on London literature and other cultural aspects of London culture were explore during class. One part was music originating from London. Bands such as the Rolling Stones were used to explain the London music scene in the 60s. One major part of London and British culture was the Mod movement, which is how I was introduced to The Who. I was instantly fascinated by their music and then CSI happened and I was hooked.

My Love – Justin Timberlake

Even though this song is by now 9 years old, this still gets me every time. That beat! That routine! Can someone please teach me the whole thing from scratch? This song makes my inner dancer tick. If I hear this, I simply can help myself and have to dance.

What are some of your favorite songs starting with the letter M?
