Lookbook: Cozy transitionals

February is one of those months where it becomes difficult to decide what to wear. There are days when the promise of spring is in the air, while the next day you are freezing cold because it is snowing, raining and windy. And yes, if you live in The Netherlands you know that that can all happen in the course of one day. I thought I’d make a lookbook (yes, I am bringing these back to the blog!) to show you what I choose to wear during a month in which the weather can take whichever direction it pleases.

5 outfits that I love for this time of year

Where my previous outfit inspiration posts featured outfits that I wore either at random times or all in the same week, this blog post features some outfits that I threw together for the purpose of the post. That doesn’t mean that I won’t wear these out. In fact, these are all potential outfits I had in mind that I wanted to try out and see how they would look on. And I simply decided to share that process with you. I love experimenting with clothes and have made plenty of mishaps in the past. And I still do from time to time. However, I liked putting together the outfits I have in mind and just see if they work. That is why this blog post is a) picture heavy and b) filled with new items I showed you last month.

Outfit no.1 is and H&M heavy outfit. I have said this before but I think about 75% of the items I wear are H&M. This entire outfit was bought in January minus the shoes. The shoes I’ve had for a long time, but they are about the comfiest things ever which is why I still have them. The plether treggings were on sale and I thought: wouldn’t it be nice if I’d pair those with a big, chunky, light grey cable knit sweater? I searched the webshop and found this oversized turtleneck sweater. And I love it! The PU leather does squeak a little when you walk and it’s not the warmest, but the sweater makes up for it double time. It is the softest, coziest sweater I own. My favorite part about this outfit is the clash of textures.

The minute I spotted this geometric dress in the ZARA January sales I knew that it had my name written all over it. I absolutely adore skater dresses and find it a fit that is mostly very flattering on my body type. This dress is made of a thick, stretchy knit material which makes this dress feel heavy and structured. I think it works best with a cardigan or blazer on top and I love pairing black and white items with a pop of color to keep the outfit from getting boring. By adding the blazer, I not only downplay my bust, but also create the illusion of a more defined hourglass shape. The fact that I have a pair of heels that perfectly match the blazer is of course a nice bonus.

One of my favorite purchases from last fall is this burnt orange sweater. I find orange a difficult color to pull off, but when I find an item that suits me I usually snatch it up. This sweater was no different. It looks great with so many different bottom pieces, but when I wear this, I like keeping the base of my outfit plain and simple. Most of the time I’ll pair this with black skinnies. For this look, I decided to pair it with a black tight bodycon skirt. As that is my other favorite way of wearing sweaters. To downplay the curves, I opted for a more manly shoe. I love playing with contrasting feminine/ masculine pieces in my outfits. I feel it adds something unexpected and different to an outfit, giving it more edge and interest.

Red is my favorite color, especially the fire engine red of this skirt. Again as with the monochrome + blue, I like adding a pop of red in an otherwise black and white outfit. This outfit is simple, yet that is why I think it works. I wasn’t sure about the belt so I took it off. I have been very much into wearing little to no accessories apart from what I am wearing every day. I’d much rather let the outfit speak for itself. And with a bold red skirt, you won’t have to worry about that! This sweater is a very thin knit, so perfect for those warmer days while still keeping you warm. And I love a good stripe: it is one of my favorite prints, especially when it comes in monochrome.

The last outfit is completely black and white from top to bottom. Again, I decided to play around with textures and prints to keep the outfit from getting boring. The only accessory I am wearing here is the red lip. I love pairing all monochrome outfits not only with a pop of color from my wardrobe, but also from my make up collection. This Topshop jumper is one of the softest ones I have ever felt. It makes it extra comfy to wear and I think it looks great with any skirt. The velvet skit is of a nice and thick material, which makes it warm and cozy. And pointed toe shoes are all the rage right now, so these shoes are bang on the money.

Which outfit would you wear?

  1. Maaike, you look absolutely fabulous in all of these photos! I love all the outfits, even though I don’t think I myself would wear them. There is always an item which I feel doesn’t line up with my personality (or how I express my personality in my fashion choices at least), like leather pants or bright colors. You’re rocking them though! And the way your cobalt blue blazer and heels match – that is just perfect.
