I’m not one to stick to fashion rules. Most of the standard fashion do’s and dont’s just aren’t for me, but I do think that there are a few items in my wardrobe that I feel round it out and form the core basis of my daily outfit picks. So I wondered: if I could only pick 5 items from my closet that I couldn’t go without, what would they be?
5 Clothing items everyone should own
I’ve tried picking items that aren’t just basics by itself, but that also represent a full group of items in my wardrobe. So this is not that blog post that tells you to own a particular type of white shirt. I think that within the categories I propose in this blog post, you should try to fit one item that suits your style and needs. Fashion is meant to be fun if anything and to me, too many rules, take some of that fun away.
The Thin Knit
My love for thin knit sweaters knows no bounds and I have blogged about it many times before. The main reason why I love them is for layering and because they can go with anything. These are some of the most versatile pieces in my wardrobe as they are easy to combine and work in many different weather conditions. Layered over a blouse it’s great for winter time, but it’s also a good piece to keep on hand for chillier summer evenings.
The Flattering Blouse
Blouses or button downs are a staple in my wardrobe and I feel that everyone should at least own one blouse that fits well. Again, blouses are great for layering. Whether you pair them with a sweater and have the collar poking out, or whether you layer them over a cardigan or wear them as is: a blouse is a great piece to dress up an outfit in an instant. And not only that, blouses are also great for adding a preppy vibe, especially if the blouse has a peter pan collar.
The Denim Jeans
Who could live without jeans? I know I couldn’t. It may take a while to find that perfect fit, but once you do there is just no turning back. I swear by Topshop’s Jamie jeans and own quite a few pairs by now. A good pair of denim can make or break an outfit and there are so many different washes to choose from. Plus, denim is by no means merely a casual wear item. If you go for black, with a pair of heels and a blouse and blazer, they could work for more dressed up environments as well.
The Perfect Dress
We can’t leave out dresses on this blog. I love dresses, mainly because I feel they are the most flattering on my body type of all clothing items. Jeans and a t-shirt may be easy, but to me that honor goes to a dress. Just think about it: you throw on a dress and you instantly have a complete outfit. Throw on a blazer or cardigan and a pair of tights and you can rock any dress year round. My particular favorite are fit and flare skater dresses, but find a cut that suits your body type and the options are endless.
The Black Ankle Bootie
If there is just one item from this list you end up looking into, I think it should be a pair of black ankle booties. My preference goes out to a Chelsea boot style, but there are so many to choose from. From a toughened biker chic style to a more classic pointed toe or pistol boot: a black ankle bootie goes with everything and works pretty much year round.
