2017 Makeup favorites

2017 may be over, but I still wanted to talk you through some of my top favorite makeup products of the year that has gone past. I’ve selected products in all different categories except for brows and face powder. The reason? I didn’t have a favorite. In those categories I find I am not too picky and a true favorite hasn’t changed from other years. So apart from brows and powders, these are my favorite makeup products from 2017.

Now not all of the products in this blog post were new to 2017 per se, but they were either new to me or I started to really use the products in my daily makeup routines. I like changing up the makeup I use and I notice I grab for certain products only for a specific amount of time or occasion. I change foundation as my skin tone changes throughout the year and I like changing up blush and bronzer according to the seasons. That is why you will find more than one of each product in each of the categories. I have added links to any product reviews I may have done in the past on any of these products. So click those if you want to see swatches, close ups and how these products perform!

Primer

2017 makeup favorites

ELF Hydrating Face Primer
Catrice Light Correcting Serum Primer

Primer is a product I only started using this past year. Before I never used primers and that’s why there are only drugstore primers in this 2017 favorites list. I love starting out with a drugstore item to see whether I even like using such a product, before deciding to splurge on a product from a luxury brand. These two have been my favorites. The ELF primer more so towards the end of the year and the Catrice over the summer time. The latter was also one of the most popular blog posts of 2017 coincidentally.

Foundation

2017 makeup favorites

IT Cosmetics CC cream
Catrice Made To Stay foundation
Maybelline Fit Me Matte & Poreless Foundation

In 2017, I also started to dabble around in fuller coverage foundations. Where I loved a sheer to light coverage before, I have been loving what a thicker foundation can do for my dry skin. The IT Cosmetics CC Cream definitely falls into that category. The Catrice one is a little bit more lightweight, but can be build up if necessary. It is my favorite Catrice foundation to date. Lastly, Maybelline launched a new range of Fit Me foundations at the end of 2016 and I was surprised to be able to find my exact shade. It is a good foundation to boot.

Concealer

2017 makeup favorites

Urban Decay Naked Skin concealer
Rimmel Match Perfection concealer

Concealer was my first love and it will be my last. When it comes to face products, I have always preferred concealers over foundations, so it’s a category I have more experience with. So this year there were two concealers that stood out. After using up the LA Girl Proconceal, I switched to the Rimmel Match Perfection concealer over the summer time. I loved that so much that I used it until it was gone. After that I started using the Urban Decay one. I only stopped using it because it became too dark for my skin tone, but that was a great concealer too.

Lips

2017 makeup favorites

Colourpop Lippiestix Trust Me
Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink
MAC Satin lipstick Brave
Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche lipstick Rhubarb
Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution lipstick Love Liberty

In lips, I haven’t been too adventurous. I know what I like and that is what I stick with. But there were a few new formulas that I wanted to try this year and they became instant favorites. For a red, the one that I have worn most is my Colourpop Lippiestix in Trust Me. For a nude, I went with MAC’s Brave if I didn’t know what to wear: that shade goes with everything! For a liquid lip, I went with the newly launched Maybelline Lip Inks. This is the best liquid lipstick formula in the drugstore! For high end, I went with Rhubarb by Bite: that is another favorite nude. My favorite berry lip must go to Charlotte Tilbury’s Love Liberty.

Highlighter

2017 makeup favorites

Benefit Dandelion Twinkle
Colourpop Hippo

On my cheeks I have been loving a little bit of highlight, but I had my preferences. For a subtle highlight I have been loving Benefit’s Dandelion Twinkle. This is simply the most perfect subtle, everyday highlight. Early on in the year, I was all about that super intense glow and I was loving my Colourpop highlighter in Hippo. It was super on trend as 2017 was also the year of the lilac/ pink/ purple highlight and this fits right up that alley.

Bronzer

2017 makeup favorites

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder Radiant Light
Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil bronzer
Physician’s Formula Butter bronzer

In bronzer, I have two favorites: one of them is a combo. There is one set of products that I love to wear as bronzer/ contour in the summer time. This was my favorite last year too, but I still love it. And that is the combination of the Ambient Lighting powder in a darker shade by Hourglass combined with Too Faced’s Milk Chocolate Soleil bronzer as a contour. For the winter time, I like going for something more subtle and I skip the contour. To give my face a nice glow though, I go for the infamous Butter Bronzer by Physician’s Formula.

Blush

2017 makeup favorites

H&M Blush Tawny Peach
Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush Seduce
ELF Baked Blush Rich Rose

For blush it’s been a few staples that I also loved last year. But there is something new in here too. A staple in my blush collection are dusty rose blush shades and H&M’s Tawny Peach is just that. I just haven’t gotten round to reviewing it yet. The Tarte blush in Seduce has a similar tone to it, but it slightly deeper and that is THE blush I am wearing this fall and winter. For the summer I love a bronzy pink shade and ELF’s Rich Rose fits that bill perfectly.

Single eyeshadows

2017 makeup favorites

Nabla Single eyeshadow Selfish & Alchemy
Colourpop Supershock eyeshadows (1 & 2)

I am not a huge fan of single eyeshadows, but when you find a few that are so unique that you actually reach for them on a regular basis, then they need to be featured in a favorites post. I own two Nabla duochrome shadows and I love their formula. I only got around to reviewing one so far, but let me tell you: the other one is stunning too. 2017 was also the year I truly got into Colourpop shadows. Their Supershock formula is unique as it is a cream to powder that works great for one shadow looks or layered under other shadows.

Eyeshadow palettes

2017 makeup favorites

Anastasia Modern Renaissance
Too Faced Chocolate Bon Bons
Lorac Pro 3

This was a difficult category to narrow down, but I tried to be tough on myself and am featuring just 3 of my most used, most favorite eyeshadow palettes for 2017. These were all released earlier. I seem to have a way to try products a year after they come out sometimes, mainly because some of these products are a lot more difficult to get your hands on if you’re not in The States. Modern Renaissance was my go to palette this fall. I lived for the reds in that palette. The Bon Bons palette by Too Faced is quite possibly my favorite Too Faced palette, so I had to feature it. And lastly, one of my all time favorites is the Lorac Pro 3 which is THE palette I grab for if I don’t know what look to make.

What were your favorite makeup products of 2017?

  1. I spy some of my favorites on here as well! Bite Amuse Bouche and Charlotte Tilbury have the best lipstick formulas! Also, can’t forget about a Colourpop Lippie Stix! My favorite shades are “in with the Band” and “Brink”. Loved reading about your favorites!

  2. If I had a dollar for every time I hear that IT Cosmetics CC cream recommended, I’d have enough money to buy it! 😉 I plan to pick it up come Spring Sephora sale since they finally stock it at Sephora Canada now. I’d imagine it would be a good Spring / Summer foundation.
I had forgotten about the Rimmel Match Perfection concealer – I had a tube ages ago and I did really like it! I didn’t love the brush application – so silly.
I’ve heard of the brand Nabla from another blog – seems like their eye shadows are good quality. Of course, I think their distribution is limited to Europe!

    • Ulta now ships to Canada too if I’m not mistaken ;-). Nabla is available in North America if I’m not mistaken. At least a US beautyguru (Mariah Leonard) raves about their stuff too, so it has to be available from somewhere. Unfortuntely it is also a harder brand to get a hold of here as well (online only) and I was lucky enough that my old place had a new makeup shop open last year that started carrying the brand last summer. That’s how I know the brand anyway. They also do amazing highlighters.
